Review of Electricity and matter 3/5

Today we reviewed the fact that matter is composed of atoms. The parts of the atoms are the proton which is positvely charged, the electron which has a negative charge, and the neutron which has a neutral charge. There was a video clip about Ben Franklin. Franklin was the first to publish the theory of electrical charge and force. We learned that the Coulomb is an SI unit of charge and it is a scalar quantity. 1 Coulomb is equal to 6.25x10^18 elementary charges. 1 elementary is equal o 1.60x10^-19C.

We learned when objects become positive and negative:

- objects will become electrically positive or negative when there is a loss or gain of electrons.

-Electrons are always in motion

-different materials have tendencies to gain or lose electrons relative to the material it comes into contact with.

Water:

- neutral objects can be attracted to a charged rod. this is because water has a partial positive and partial negative end.

The electroscope:

-the electroscope is used to determine the presence of a charge.

- an object of known charge is brought close to the electroscope, and the behavior is observed.

Grounding:

- grounding the electroscope means that electrons are added or removed to neutralize the static charge.
